Ecuador, a land of natural and cultural treasures
Located on the west coast of the South American continent, Ecuador is a landlocked country enclosed by Peru to the south and Colombia to the north. It is so named because of its location on the equator, exactly half way between the Earth's poles. It has a surface area of 283 500 km² and counts more than 15 million inhabitants. The most highly populated city, Guayaquil, is also a very important port. This former Spanish colony offers the richest biodiversity on the planet, and there are also vestiges of vanished civilisations to be found. Regular Air France flights leave Amsterdam for Quito and Guayaquil. To prepare your visit, don't hesitate to consult the Foreign Office for entry formalities.
Visiting historical Ecuador
If you want to discover Ecuador, a visit to Quito is a must. You can admire the colonial architecture of the Palace of Justice or the Archiepiscopal Palace, visit the cultural museum to learn the country's history, wander around the cathedral or climb to the top of the San Juan watchtower which offers an unbeatable view over the city.
Guayaquil has its own set of curiosities which you must not miss. The flower market, the Cerro Santa Ana but most of all the historical park with its sections for native, traditional and urban life will leave you with memories for a lifetime.
If you prefer to take in an older culture, you can visit the Inca ruins in Ingapirca or visit the Indian market in Cotacachi, in the heart of a picturesque rural region.
Ecuador's natural riches
The variety of its landscapes and the richness of its flora and fauna illustrate Ecuador's great potential. The country also offers both magnificent beaches and tropical forests (West Amazon), breath-taking mountains (the Andes) and volcanic islands (the Galapagos archipelago). The landscapes are varied and magnificent, and there are so many sites to visit that you are bound to find something to suit you in the beauty of the many nature reserves in the country.
Choose Mindo with its rainforest, Cotopaxi, for its volcano and its lagoons, Antisana and its snowy peaks or Cajas with its lakes and unique flora. Don't miss the opportunity to join a cruise to the Galapagos islands. The archipelago is recognised as a World Heritage site by UNESCO and offers, among other things, undersea diving and whale spotting.
